CHAPTER EIGHT

Just before noon, James could see the stolen herd through his binoculars, seven miles away on the west side of the river, the image shimmering through the rising heat waves. He passed the binoculars to Philip, who looked and passed them to someone else. After everyone looked, they stealthily moved to within two miles, always behind trees and brush and gullies.

James studied the herd again. “Most of their riders are at the back of the herd. I count...I see twenty—ten, no twelve at the back.” He handed the binoculars to Philip.

Philip adjusted the focus. “Twenty-four. Some up the hill. Scouts out front and most in back.”

“They’re expecting us to attack from the rear,” Gustaf noted.

“That would mean up to thirty.” James studied the sky. Not a cloud. Weather helped the rustlers, but not them. “The moon won’t come up until after midnight sometime. We want to stampede the cattle northward before that, if we can.”

Gustaf said, “If we can figure out when they change the guards, maybe we can ride up and fool them.”

“I like that. Philip, after dark, get close and watch. We’ll see what they do tonight and take back the herd tomorrow night.”

Philip was looking behind them. “Got company,” he said, looking through the binoculars.

“Good guys or bad guys?” James asked.

“O’Keefe.”

“Well, I’ll be,” James said.
